View Full Version : How many peeps still really love decoupage?

I was thinking today that even though stamping and colouring is so much easier and more fun, I still like nothing more than cutting out some decoupage and making toppers from them. I watch Barbara etc.. but picking up a speed ball brayer just ain't my thing. When I stamp I still decoupage the image!

I prefer non-die cut, unless it's Reddy, but apart from House Mouse, that's really why I buy CD's because the non-die cut stuff to buy is quite naff.

I started with decoupage and I think it will always be my fave craft, anyone else still in the decoupage closet?

Me! I make a lot of stuff with craft artist now, so the matting and layering is actually fake, but then I decoupage the image... so easy in CAP as you cut and paste onto an inserted page.

Closet? No! I'm a Decoupager and I'm proud!:muscle::giggle:

Most of my cards are decoupaged, only I have to cheat as I am useless at cutting out. Hangs head in shame......

My Robo does a brilliant job with print & cut. :D

I don't mind some decoupaged, but unfortunately at work cannot sell anything decoupage, as none of them like it

I have really got into it lately. I used to avoid it like the plague.... but now I love to decoupage. I still love stamping, colouring and drawing but isn't it funny how our crafty-tastes change.

You know Keiko, it was quite popular, but horror of horror I am not no allowed to sell my cards as we got taken over by an American bank and they stopped the bulletin board and selling anything - as our contracts changed and there is some nonsense about not putting pressure on people to sell stuff in the workplace - so that's the end of that business!

You are right Sandra, we do change..it's kind've cool to be a stamper...but I've never been cool lol, but I do stamp thesedays and had several mishaps in the early days stopped stamping, I guess Pro markers have made life much easier.

Dax no shame in die cuts, I just wish there was more choice again.

I've never really liked traditional decoupage designs, but I do decoupage my stamped images to give them more depth.

I am not a traditional decoupage person. I like to take a patterned background paper and cut pieces out of that to 3d in corners.

Not me, I'm afraid, ROC, I never even got into the closet! I have tried decoupage but haven't taken to it. I do, however, admire those who make such lovely images.

I'm so naff at cutting out I don't do decoupage cards ... BUT ... I decoupage furniture lol! I do the whole decopatch thing but use paper napkins. My last thing was to decoupage my coffee table because it was looking really worn & I was bored with it. I painted it with white gloss and covered it with butterflies & flowers. Was really pleased with the result until I ruined it with varnish that turned yellow :( ... in the process now of sanding the whole thing back and re-doing it.

I don't have the patience to sit and cut stuff out!! I want it ready NOW. I would only ever use one layer anyway - I'm with Keiko in that people don't tend to buy deeply decoupaged images because of the postage costs. But I do admire those of you with the patience and skills to cut tricky images out. Cxx

I used to do a lot of decoupage, and spent my evenings cutting out, so I could have a mega card making session at the weekend. These days I do prefer stamping and colouring, but still do a bit of decoupage. I am more likely to use die-cut decoupage these days though, as my hands can be rather painful if I do too much cutting out. I am currently making Christmas cards from an Hunkydory kit, some of them have some decoupage, but most are just toppers. I have to say that I am actually enjoying doing them, which is good, as I had lost my crafty mojo. I seem to be in the mood for glitter this year, the last couple of years it has been ribbons, but very little ribbon on my cards so far!

I still enjoy decoupage, about equally with stamping and ink messy effects.
I don't buy sheets any more though. Print off from CDs or decoupage my stamped images. That can be interesting as, with a bit of practice, you only need to ink up and stamp the bits needed for the top layers.

As far as selling is concerned (charity mainly as I've said before) the decoupage cards seem to be the most popular ones. Those not addicted to the craft are often very intrigued as to how it is done.

I'm with you ROC, I adore doing decoupage, and I'm finding that whilst I do stamp lots more than I did I still decoupage it, and I don't like die-cut decoupage at all

I get all set with scissors, cutting knife a large glass for the cuttings, and relax, and then later sit with foam pads and pritt stick (adjustment time ) and assemble them, I have sheets filed with the other sheets all cut, I had some adoreable bird ones from QVC yrs ago and everytime I still thoroughly enjoy it.

I go off dec for while but always go back to it! enjoy the results but not too many layers usually one or two is more than enough to give a bit of dimension to the card. Years ago I was into pictures and now have a drawer full them and can't quite make myself throw them out.

Agree, definitely not too many layers. Postage costs for a start but I think two layers, at most, on the base layer gives a better effect. With the sheets I print off from my CDs I often find that a bit of juggling means you can create two cards from one sheet. Not a huge saving I know but still useful

I am another that doesn't like a lot of layers. Quite often don't use them all. Not just because of the postage costs, but also I think that some of the smaller layers especially look silly.

I used to be into decoupage, but was never overly keen on the finished look, then I discovered colouring in and I was a goner........ sit me down with an image, stamped or printed and a set of pens of any description and I am like a pig in poop, happy, happy, happy; I can colour away my stress and worries.

I used to love decoupage but sadly these days my eye problems mean I don't see well enough to cut accurately and that just really p*sses me off, as I can see well enough to know it's rubbish! I have tried the die-cut sheets thinking they would be the answer, but all too often I am still not happy with the results, as by the time I have trimmed/sanded off the gubbinsy attaching bits, I have often messed up the bits!

So now I am really concentrating on my scrapbooking and stamping and general card making - invested in a couple of machines (Eclips and Vagabond) to go with my beloved Cuttlebug and it is time to play!

I love doing decoupage depending on the design. Even the designs you pop out I think look better with a fraction more taken off as they leave a bit of white card round them, but to do it properly is very time consuming. Also, now postage has gone up, it costs more to send a decoupaged card.

I'm with you ROC, love it. I normally sit in front of the TV doing the cutting and putting together, then add them to cards at the dining room table. I STILL haven't tried stamping though, even though I bought all of the stuff ready to give it a go. If it keeps on raining tomorrow, perhaps I'll get the stamps out........ then again, I've got a new Kanban kit from QVC and lot's of new bits from Wins to play with. Oh man!!!

I don't do much decoupage at all, in fact was just thinking the other night f taking my hundreds of sheets to a charity shop for them to sell. Some of the images are pretty naff.

Because i can't be bothered, if I do any decoupage I like die cut :)

Tru - on Facebook there are loads of bring and buy craft sales and even the naffest of decoupage sheets appears to sell (takes all sort, I expect we're talking Le Suh), PM me of you want more info.

I make cards that sell in my department at work for charity and the decoupage ones are always the first to go. My eldest daughter loves to sit and cut out the most intricate decoupage and she puts them into card bags ready to make up. Youngest daughter has to have die cut so in our house its knows as Tanya decoupage for the cut it yourself or Naomi decoupage for die cut.

I have recently become a stamping convert thanks to rock a blocks (could never get a full clean image with acrylic blocks and wooden backed stamps) and Promarkers and Sheena's Paint Fusion range. I find colouring in so relaxing but it does make people laugh when I say I have spent the night colouring in - Im sure they have an image of me with a children's colouring book and felt tip pens. I still have a long way to go in the learning curve but Im enjoying the journey.

I really like the 3d effect of decoupage...the card for the one year old I made yesterday was of a giraffe and it was deco'd onto a zoo type background...I usually always try to decoupage my special cards. I prefer to cut out my designs rather than it be precut...I find it calming to sit at night and snip away.....hate the tidying up of the wee snippets of paper though...this is the only down side.

I have a wee Deans Shortebread tin I use; loved the shortbread and adore what I use the tin for; once full it gets emptied on the fire :D

I work over a tray when cutting out, very handy if working in front of the TV. Uncut sheets and cut pieces are kept in separate piles as I work. Easy then to tip the waste bits in the bin

I enjoy decoupage too. I also love stamping, but because this involves digging out stamps, inkpads, promarkers etc. I only really enjoy this if I can find a good couple of hours to spare to get stuck in. Between work, family and other commitments, I can usually only manage one good long session every month or so. With decoupage, I can have a couple of sheets to hand to cut out in when I have a few minutes to spare. Sometimes I think the images are too deep, so I don't always use every layer. I get the feeling from reading the posts on here that a lot of peeps aren't that keen on decoupaged cards - I try to remember who has mentioned this and avoid sending them a decoupage card if possible. The cards I send to family and friends though are often decoupaged and they seem to be delighted with them.

I find cutting out in front of the telly really therapeutic. Not done any decoupage for ages as tend to stamp and colour but remember the Jolly nation xmas decoupage just love cutting that out as not too fiddly. Might do some more cutting when I get back from my hols.:)

I used to adore decoup but must admit not done much cuttery for a while, though I still go back to it every so often. I'm not fussed as to whether it's die cut or not, I go by the image I want to use. Part of the reason I haven't jumped on some of the latest Kanban kits its that they seem to be just toppers, rather than dimensional IYSWIM. I like a quick card as much as anyone, but a topper & a matching sentiment on co-ordinating cardstock doesn't always do it for me. I still want there to be a little 'wow you can't get this in a shop' at the back of the recipient's mind when they open the envelope.

But I loves me stamping - just the effects & techniques that can be applied...yummy!

Although it can be painful cutting out, the marjority of my cards have decoupage on them or inside them. I love it and always have. I even decoupage when using rubber stamps if the image allows.
I often cut out in the afternoon when resting with my mia on my knee. She ends up covered in snips of paper lol. I have a little peddle bin I put all my craft rubbish in. I got BOGOF when I got one for the bathroom. So put the other to crafty use. I think it's only about 3litres, but it's amazing just how much paper ect it will hold.

I like some 3D decoupage, but some is too OTO and I don't much like the pyramage and other variations. My 11yo son loves doing 3D decoupage and he has his own stock of boy friendly designs. I am afraid we both prefer ready cut.

I think it can look lovely with just a few layers and that way you can get two cards out of one design.

I 3D'd a dog stamp recently which was satisfying.

I don't do as much decoupage as I used to as my fingers won't let me cut out all the little bits especially those studio light ones, how they manage to cut all those tiny flowers I never know.just had al ook in my stash and I must have 300 sheets and about 10 books, but I can't seem to throw them out LOL
I started decoupage years ago using those sheets from craft creations they were no all set out in layers they were just prints you had to work out what to cut yourself, so I enjoyed the challenge, where as now its all done for you, but I am thankfull for the die cut decoupage now.

My first decoupage was also the Craft Creations sheets. I remember sitting for ages deciding what should be on each layer. Do you remember the poster size sheets they used to have on C&C years ago. Still have loads of that decoupage left. Lady called Judy used to bring it on, but I can't recall her surname.

Me too Budgie. Had to chop them down into A4 sheets with four images per sheet cos there was no other way of storing them. Some of those fairies didn't half have some fiddly bits.

Must admit that watching the Hunkydory show last night I'm tempted, very very tempted. Trouble is I don't need any more ready made decoupage sheets and I'd promised myself I wouldn't buy any more, not even House mouse ones.

I like decoupage but normally I use die cut (Reddy) or Studiolight from Pinflair. I have also stamped cut and coloured my own. As I have only been crafting for two years I am still trying everything out so I flit from one thing to another. My Robo is brilliant for printing and cutting too. I am away on hol from Wednesday for 2 weeks and no doubt will have serious crafting withdrawal symptoms. Isn't it weird how you get so involved that you don't want to stop crafting, I'm already planning what I'm going to do when I get back, how sad is that

I started crafting 2 years ago after discovering hunkydory on c&c amazed at how lovely the cards were. I have since converted to spellbinders as I like delicate looking work. I have loads of kits as I am a craftaholic and do dip into them.
I have got th stamping gear and clarity dvd's which I look forward to trying out after I move!!!

I did the same Looby. They are all still stored in a yellow plastic file, that I got when I first joined the c&c club, many years ago!

I went through the phase with Anton Piek pictures, then cutting out from sheets etc but I didn't really take to all the angled stuff.....pyramage and all the other ages that followed.
I do still decoupage now & again but from sheets, though cutting out is for me more satisfying than die cuts, which has reminded me of a box of 'ready made' toppers I need to use up

I have a pet hate though, decoupage a mile high attached with foam squares that are so visible it spoils the effect. I do on occasions use foam pads but I curl the piece and hide them, as much as possible, preferring silicone/glue gel. But thats just me!

I'm the same with flat layers. Cringe when the do demos on C&C and make a big thing of look how many layers there are. Prefer two or three, definitely with the paper/card curled and definitely on Pyra or any other strange "age"

I love decoupage still and when I do Craft Fairs I find House Mouse sells out 1st. I was so tempted by this years designs at Joanna Sheens but I still have loads of last years designs left. Must be a good girl and use them up. I do tend to do less layers though and not so high as they were years ago. I put a few foam squares on the large bits and them glue gel around the outside to get dimension and hide the foam. Works out a bit cheaper as I find the glue gel a bit pricey. Do like a bit of layering when I stamp as well I just think an extra layer on a design gives it more dimension but obviously my own opinion.Off to promarker some penny black designs for christmas (may do two layers:blush:)

ROC, can I just say..... I LOVE decoupage......so long as nobody wants ME to do it.... I just don't like having to do lots of fiddly cutting out, but I do like the results others with better cutting skills than I have can achive. As a stamper I know fine well that stamping a second and even third time and then using the extra stamped images to cut out and layer can really add a lovely look to a card and I prolly ought to do that more often......but then I think about the fiddly cutting and back off.

I went to make cards this weekend and decided to take a long hard look at what is in my craft room - and the amount of decoupage, invertage and pyramage well, I hang my head in shame lol. So I set to and got my skates on and over the last three days I have made up and put together nearly 50 cards. Quite a bit of the decoupage was what my eldest daughter calls Naomi decoupage (her younger sister's name - she hates cutting out) - the die cut kind but I did wield my scissors for quite a few. Anyway, one tube of pinflair glue, god knows how many foam pads and a roll of DST later 50 cards are finished, bagged up, priced and ready to go to the hospital to sell for charity. Have to say, an ATG is looking a more attractive proposition after peeling all that backing off the DST lol.

But I did find the cutting out relaxing and there was a sense of achievement when the last of the cards was sealed and boxed up. I think when I have made about another 150 cards I will have made a sizeable dent in the decoupage lol.
