View Full Version : Oooh this made me cringe.......

:rolleyes:I don't know if anyone noticed this last Friday when Dawn was on with Catherine Huntley, but I've been watching the recording this evening and just noticed something that really made me cringe! There was a text from a viewer saying how beautiful Catherine looked but nothing about Dawn. When Catherine read it out, she then said that Dawn looked beautiful as well (although not with a lot of conviction, it should be said!) then went on to say "well I look beautiful and Dawn is working hard" as though that was supposed to make up for Dawn not getting a compliment about her appearance.
Well I felt so sorry for Dawn! It wasn't CH's fault that the viewer didn't give Dawn a compliment, but all of my life I have been the "hardworking clever" person and never the "pretty" one and I know just how depressing it is when you don't get the "pretty" compliments! As I've got older I've got a lot more confident about my looks so I don't need those compliments now, but I'm sure that I'm not alone in thinking how thoughtless it is when people look at 2 women together and single one out for a compliment on her appearance and not the other. Believe me you just feel like getting a paper bag and sticking it over your head and sitting in a dark room!
Anyway that's my rant for the evening!

Oh dear, I'd say that texter put her foot in it and agree its a bit cringeworthy.
Bliddy stupid director to let that text be shown on air.

I saw that, to be honest the text was not so bad, the real problem was when Catherine made such a meal of reading it out - the professional and graceful thing to do would have been to simply read it, thank the viewer for the compliment and move on. Instead Catherine opened mouth and stuck her foot right in it by drawing attention to the fact that there had been no corresponding compliment for Dawn's appearance also. She then compounded this by making a hash of trying to point out that the viewer had complimented Dawn in a different way - I think the text had contained a "thank you" message to Dawn for all her hard work - which Catherine, in her haste to cover her gaff managed to mangle into just "Dawn works hard" It's these kind of presenter errors that have I always made me think that CH is a few bricks short of a full load, a real life, female version of the Harry Enfield character Tim Nicebut-Dim.
Oh and btw, point of interest - Dawn was smartly enough attired in a red top of some sort where as Catherine was IMO rather overdresssed in a horrible dark greeny/gold off the shoulder jumper that has sleeves done in the medieval style - ie they are so damn long they cover half your hand. My guess is that at least a few of us have seen her wearing that top before - I know I have and it irriates the heck outta me cuz I just KNOW I could not bear the feeling of those awful sleeves covering my hands in that way. It's meant to look glamerous, but sorry IMO it does nothing for CH.

I often wonder how friendly they actually are. I remember a couple of years ago (before CH became a "craft expert") that it was very clear that they didn't get on, then very suddenly CH started talking up their friendship and smarming up to Dawn ( I wondered if someone up top had had as word with her). If you watch, however, there's barely a programme goes past without CH getting a little barb in and, to be perfectly honest, if I were Dawn I'd have been VERY tempted to slap her one on several occasions. The other thing that really irritates me (apart from her nauseating performances whenever a cat is mentioned - and I am very much a cat person!! - is how much time she takes to show her own creations etc when Dawn is so obviously pressed for time by the gallery. You can imagine what I was screaming at the telly on the Friday show, too, when she said she couldn't craft and talk at the same time!!!

I agree with you Marie, I was watching at the time, and was inwardly cringing when CT started her 'foot in mouthathon'. The more she said the worse it was:eek:
I actually thought Dawn looked really nice in her pink top. Unfortunately I cannot stand CT, and her lay it on thick technique just doesn't wear with me. I tend to watch the body language, and the very small little facial expressions Dawn sometimes lets slip!! I usually try and watch with the sound down low if she's on, only trouble is, I can miss what Dawn is saying too.
It's such a shame when Dawn and her team work so hard, I can just imagine how her team must feel if she doesn't get to show the samples:mad: Especially when it's because el gobbo has taken up all the air time with talk about her pussy cats, or is it puddy cats
I think I've finished now :D

I too am a member of the anti Single White Female fraternity, or should that be sorority (sp).
Basically I am a grumpy and think that Dawn should just be left alone to show us in her own way. The ruddy products would still see because we would be able to see what we like about them and it would encourage us to purchase.
Please lock into a darkened room CH, Ali Keenan (god that woman can talk) and Jill (excuse me whilst I sniff some more) Franks, and NEVER let them near a craft programme again.

I agree, I'd much rather watch Dawn without a presenter. I think the term "prima donna" pretty well sums up some of the presenters who don't seem to appreciate that the stars of the show are the products, which we may want to buy, and the guest presenters who can tell us about the products. I think that some of the the presenters need to go on a course about behaving gratiously - there is a huge difference between being sugary nice for the sake of the cameras and genuine good manners.

I've found that some of the presenters are now more into craft than before; and who could blame them I would love the job, (Craft only shows please). Ali Keegan seems to know all about every thing in the whole wide world! I tend to turn the sound down when she is on a craft show, (it's all I watch QVC & IW for). Jill Franks is rather bossy for my liking too; she wants to run the shows. Catherine Huntly is not yet on my list of irritating presenters, but there is still time!!! I sometimes get the impression that Julia Roberts would rather not work with Dawn...

Only sometimes eh?
I doubt if those two get on, both are strong willed women who want to be the main focus of attention - my bet is "Queen of QVC" Ms Roberts will not relish having to play second fiddle to DB.

well I should say that this has ended up being a bit of a winge about the QVC presenters, which actually wasn't my intention as the point of the original post was to say how much I felt for Dawn when watching the show, having been in similar situations myself! But having looked at the comments this morning, it appears to have become a bit of a bitching session, myself probably the worst included there, so I'm sorry to have let that happen as I know we're all better than that.
Suffice to say taht it is interesting how many people have some frustrations with certain QVC presenters, I'm just relieved that the K & Co show this morning is being hosted by Craig! So i'm off for my hour long coffee break which strangely enough starts at 10 am today!! lol!
I can't stand Catherine Huntley either. She seems to stand really close to Dawn and it gives me the creeps. And when she starts going on about her "kiddy kats" it makes me feel like I want to punch her through the telly! When Ali Keenan has done a few craft shows recently I always want to shout "shut the f*** up you stupid woman!", but Catherine makes me feel really really aggressive. Rant over. :o

I love really long sleeves, and I'm forever pulling my long sleeves down so they cover half my hands! I did think the off-the-shoulder number was totally unsuitable for daytime tv though. Possibly ok for a jewellery show, but not for crafting.

I haven't noticed any bitching at all Marie. We're just giving our opinions on the presenters. A good presenter can enhance a programme and make it even more enjoyable for the viewers, but a bad presenter can totally ruin the whole thing for us. Threads don't always go the way you expect them to. :)

Sorry I didn't mean to criticise anybody's comments. I fully agree with your comments about the presenters - we've just seen Craig with teh lady from K&Co and it was a lovely show, a lesson in how to present that I think some of the others should be required to sit and watch!

Unfortunately, some of the presenters (and Catherine Huntley is guilty of this) are so anxious to be nice, they find themselves in a hole and carry on digging. I dare say that Dawn Bibby is a confident lady and while we might find what was texted a bit hurtful, she'd know it wasn't personal and ignore it.
Also on the subject of working with the presenters who may annoy her, she knows that its something she (or any of the other guest presenters) have to endure to get their profile up with the viewing public. I just think its a pity that the QVC management don't place presenters more appropriately, so we aren't treated to inane voice overs by some presenters, when we want to listen to the guest.

As long as we are voiceing our views, someone that knows even a little bit about craft might be nice on the camera's too because sometimes its dire!!!

The show this morning worked simply because the presenter didn't interrupt the guest, it was a pleasure to watch. In fact I didn't think that CH was too bad last week, she interrupted less than Ms Keenan does usually. I sometimes think that the problem is that the women presenters are trying too hard - I think it often applies to all of us as women because we care about what OTHER WOMEN think, so we try to look perfect, act perfectly, etc, because we know that other women will the first to give us a list of criticisms. And I'm the same as everyone else. But the one thing that really annoys me is poor manners and when the presenters continually talk over the guests or interrupt, that is not acceptable. It is also poor business practice if the presenters' presentations are irritating potential customers who turn down the sound and might miss something, or even turn off!

I agree LJ, they tend to fawn over Dawn and she look uncomfortable with it, she's better with the blokes that tease her (Anthony and Julian)!

Well Dawn is on with Sara this afternooon and I am really looking forward to it as I personally think Sara is one of the best craft presenters QVC has. She's respectful and interested in what Dawn is saying and despite having to give constant stock updates she'll try and do it after Dawn has finished speaking.
I wish QVC would allow her to do more craft shows.

What ever we think about presenters, things are not going to change. I would think that Dawn knows exactly how we all feel but has to put upwith it herself and has no choice who is on with her.

well I have to say that the craft shows today have all been a real pleasure to watch. The presenters were so relaxed and this reflected on the guests, who were clearly enjoying showing their products. So I suppose you get the good with the not so good!

Well next time Dawn is on with Catherine perhaps a few of us should text in how nice Dawn is looking? Just to even things up a bit.
I agree that CH is irritating on craft shows, I prefer Sara or even Pippa out of the women. The most annoying for interrupting guest though is Ali Young - thank god I don't watch many beauty shows.

lol! A very good idea, he he!!
Personally I thought Dawn looked nicer than CH last week, she looked a lot more professional as well!
Now I've broken my own rule about not commenting about womens' appearance, but boy it feels good.......!
