...and by novice I mean the last time I did it it was blanket stitch with my nan 30-odd years ago.

This still remains the case as this techinically isn't for me. My SIL likes knitting. Or at least she did, I'm nor sure she's done much for a few months after going a bit nuts & knitting a variety of jumpers & hats for the kids. I blaim it on ruddy Farmville myself

I know she enjoyed it when she was doing it, & I was wondering about getting her a book for Christmas to maybe give her a gentle push back into it again. A sort of knitting guide - say like this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Compendium-Knitting-Techniques-Betty-Barnden/dp/1844484068/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1260358017&sr=8-1) one.

I couldn't tell you what her technical level is like, but I thought a sort of knitting encyclopedia might be useful - any recommendations? I didn't want to get something too basic, but I thought she might like to find out about more complex stitches (or what ever)

MTIA :)

I enjoy knitting and can follow most patterns easily ( although I do have the odd moment when I have to ask my Gran for some help :D ) and would love if someone bought me this book as a Christmas present :)

I have to admit it looks the dog's b....... to me

I'm a textile scientist by trade and training, and although I've never ever been a hand knitter (Mum could knit ; Dad was the crochter  ) it really does look the part

Thanks BSB & MIlburn - I may just order that one then :) After that review Milburn I can't possibly not. I'm fairly certain they don't have reviews like that on Amazon LOL

I am a bit of an expert knitter but still wouldn't mind having that book. It seems to give basics of how to work but could also be used to design your own stuff. Might order it for myself. Not today though. Just blown my budget on Amazon with Christmas pressies!

Humph. All this lovely advice is for nought - missy has decided she wants money to put towards a camera  I shall keep it in mind though - she may still get it anyway :D
