Does anyone do loom knitting?
Try as I might, I just can't get on with knitting with needles so am about to embark on looming knitting instead and hope it will be much easier (I have pleasant memories of French Knitting years ago and it looks vaguely similar). Any tips or advice would be most appreciated!
Hi Buttercup
I didn't know what loom knitting was and found a video on the web. It looks a bit long winded to me but as you say similar to French knitting but not exactly the same (well not the same as the way I did it lol). I can knit and have to say that this looks slightly complicated to me! Not sure if complicated is the right word should have stuck with long winded I think. lol

I love knitting Buttercup. It's so relaxing and some yarns these days are beautiful. Don't you have someone who can help you out where you are going wrong? Maybe a local wool shop/club?
QVC have a knitting board coming up (SCW put it in his new item thread) which looks very much like a loom to me but smaller. I would like to try knitting on a loom though.

If it is what I think it is, I had a little plastic loom when I was a child (probably about 8 years old) called a 'Wonder knitter' and it was very similar to french knitting, except of course you got a 30cm strip rather than a cord of knitting. I noticed the other day that they seem to be making a bit of a come back. They are easy to use, but unless they have invented a new technique, you can only make things in rectangular strips.

I think all knitters have secret wool stashes. I certainly do. One of my friends even has some of hers hidden in the boot of her car!

Thanks for the video link, Pam. I agree, that one does make it look a tad complicated. I've watched a couple of videos online already, but they've tended to be more helpful!
Loom knitting seems to be really popular in the US and it's gradually filtering over here. I've bought some round looms to get started with, with the theory being that I could make hats.
Gill71 - I've tried and tried over the years, and had help, but I just can't get on with the needles - not sure why. I do loads of other crafts and sewing, but am not a natural with knitting. So I hope this will solve the problem!
Probably a stupid question Buttercup - Do the needles sort of get in the way of the bend in your arm? I find knitting much easier with shorter needles about 10 inches in length. Most of my knitting needle are very old but the newer ones are about 12 inches and I find them very awkward to use. Not sure if you can still get both lengths now.

I hope loom knitting suits you better Buttercup. You could make scarves with that knitting board to go with the hats from the circle looms!

Well, I've cast off and started having a go at lunch time, with a small round loom (ie it could turn into a hat)! It is actually very easy so far...I'm finding it quick to go around and lift the loops over one another (sorry for lack of technical terms!), but it's a bit slower going around wrapping the wool over the pegs.
I was a bit concerned at first that the knit seemed too loose, so checked back at the instructions and moved on to a tighter knit. So my first attempt does change look a bit, but I'm sure it will be fine. So far it's all quite therapeutic, so fingers crossed...

Have you tried circular needles ? they are short needles joined by a nylon sort of wire thingy , I have started using them with great results

I also like using them. I used to use them quite a lot as I knitted on the way to work and back. As they don't stick out a lot, you don't prod other passengers sitting near you on the bus or train. It made the journey pass quicker and I could fit in an extra 8-10 hours knitting in a week.
