Hi Vicki & a big warm welcome!:D

I would have thought that any local charity shop would be thrilled to receive your cards. I know my local PDSA one sells handmade cards sometimes along with all the second hand stuff. It has the advanatge too that you don't have to package them off & pay postage, but just drop them in when you're passing. Just a thought...:)

You've just reminded me about an article that was in Papercraft Inspirations (I think) a couple of months back where a lady had set up a connection with her local Army base to send blank cards out to the troops stationed around the world so that they could send greetings cards to family & friends - as the article mentioned, it's probably impossible to buy a birthday card for your mum in Iraq/Afganistan etc

I need to dig it out cos there was a contact address to send cards to.

That does sound like a great idea Welly. Do post the details if you find them, I would love to contribute.

I make cards for the Marie Curie appeal too - it's run for 3 years now, so hopefully they will do it next year and I will be able to use up more of the A6 card stash I have, since that's the size of card they like.

At my last employer, there were over a 1,000 people in our office and there used to be various fundraising events for the nominated charity of the year. It became a bit of a tradition that I used to supply cards for whatever occasion was coming up (Mothering Sunday, Easter etc) that the fundraising committee would sell. I left last December, so stopped doing this and the new place I work in is a much smaller office. I still make cards on commissions for friends for which I ask for a charitable donation and have promised to supply Christmas cards to the school I am a governor at, for them to sell at their craft fair.

Right I've found that article now.

As a brief summary, the lady lives in the Plymouth area & got in touch with her local BBC Radio station Radio Devon by sending an email to the John Govier, the chap who does the late night show (apparently, I'm sure some peeps on here will have heard of him, wrong end of the country for me :) ). John Govier thought it was a good idea & asked for listeners to send in handmade cards to him at the BBC.

'Within 48 hours of the announcement, parcels of Christmas cards flooded into the BBC Radio Devon offices, and within 3 weeks there were over 3000 of them!.....They presented the first sackful of cards to Lt Col Martin Taylor, the commanding officer at RM Stonehouse barracks in Plymouth..."It's a real boost for our personnel that they are being thought of by people back home" he said. The cards are distributed among all serving military personnel, including those stationed in Bosnia, and on manouvres elsewhere. "No location is left out or favoured, and cards are available to those in the army, airforce, navy and the Red Cross" '

The article goes on:

' If you'd like to get involved, please send your (blank) cards to:

Cards For the Troops
John Govier's Late Night Radio Show
PO Box 1034
Plymouth '

HTH :)

I personally think that what ever your political views are on the various conflicts that we are involved in, the troops are there under orders & if we can support them in some way, why not.

I have been sending cards to this appeal since Jacqui started it.
I posted some off last week and have some more to go again...Christmas cards this time.
OH did 25 years in the RAF and having 2 brothers who have also been in for donkeys years I know how difficult it was for them to find cards etc to send home.I think it's a very worthwhile cause:)

Was this the same lady who rang in to Dawn last Tuesday? There was a lady on who made and sent cards to the troops who spoke to Dawn on her Tuesday afternoon show.
