View Full Version : Wondering about requesting an additional card swap section

The title more or less is my idea in a nutshell, but rather than going to Graham direct with my proposal, I'd like your thoughts and also my idea of why this is necessary.

Firstly the cardswap section is mainly for Rainbowwand's monthly swaps and I believe that whenever we have 'extras' the whole thing becomes inwieldy and newcomers may get lost in what people have made for various swaps and actually miss out on taking the plunge and becoming involved in the monthly swap.

By the extras, I am talking about Phree's spooky swap due to hit our screens in the next couple of days, the Secret Santa swap (I am anticipating a minimum of 25 threads over a very short period), Valentine's swap, the Easter Bunny swap and any other extraordinary swaps I may not have thought of.

Generally when we don't have any extraordinary swaps, if we did get an additional section, I would anticipate it would go unused for part of the year. If I am alone in my reasoning, I am happy to go with the majority, it was just a thought.

Even if the forum thought an additional section is a good idea, there is no guarantee Graham would grant us, as we may be unwittingly charging his pocket. :)

an extra card swap section for all the other kinds of card swaps we do sounds a very good idea

I cant agree with you there Lorraine, i see the Card swap section as just that, a section for the Card Swaps no matter what format they take, havent noticed any problems navigating the section either, this is just my opinion but i dont see the need for a seperate section :)

I'd agree with RW - the card swap section already accomodates any kind of swap including birthday swaps :)

Yes it will be busier around the time of the special swaps, but to be honest I don't think we are that huge a forum that it is likely to become unmanageable, if anything it might be more confusing to split the section.

Perhaps if we could make the long running swaps sticky (if they're not already) that would help with navigation.
It doesn't bother me as I always come directly in to the "new posts" section.

Can ordinary forum members make threads stickied or do we have to ask Graham for that?

My experience of "new posts" as a function does not always work and therefore relies on knowing what time you were last on and therefore having to ask yourself "do I need or want to look at such and such a section".

you have to ask Graham to make it a sticky Lorraine

Thanks thats what I thought. Somehow I think Graham would get a little fed up being inundated with requests at peak times :)

I can see where you are coming from Lorraine but I think it would be better for it to stay as it is. I think it might be confusing to have two separate sections.

I think as we are just a small forum the one card swap section is enough, we all know about the diff types of swaps that will be happening throughout the year so thats not a problem and I think if they were in another section they would get lost as we would have to dip in and out of each swap section.
As far as the newbies I think that they will know its a card swap if its in the card swap section and we do always do a sub heading ie secret santa, birthday swap ect

Not that I have been able to join in any swaps yet, but I was thinking of a sticky thread too. To save Graham being inundated with requests, it may be possible to have one of the swap co-ordinators act as a moderator for just the card swap section

OK it seems to be an overriding thumbs down for a separate section. I am going to PM Graham regarding making the threads stickies and see what he thinks. If he gives the go ahead to the card swap co-ordinators being able to sticky just the swap section, it is rightly his decision.

I'm not too sure about a sticky thread as we seem to have so many threads about each swap ie: theme, participants and the swaps as the arrive thread. Would they all be muddled in the sticky thread? If they are I don't think it would be a good idea. I think we would need too many sticky threads to make it work.

I have PM'd Graham now and have suggested the threads gets stickied for a particular swap, ie a special, for a short space of time solely. Anyway, it may well be that Graham will be of the same opinion as you Pam, if it doesn't work at least its something that can be easily undone. He may think it appropriate the control of stickieing remain in his hands.

Had no reply from Graham to date, probably too busy. Anyway there is nothing wrong with putting forward an idea to 'possibly' improve things, other people don't agree with my idea, so be it.

not only is there nothing wrong, its ALWAYS right!! sometimes people see the point and agree, sometimes they don't, but its always right to want to improve things and speak up with ideas:D

The problem I can see with sticky threads for the "special" swaps is that if there 20 or more of us taking part (which is very likely), the sticky threads will go onto page 2 of the card swap section and therefore possibly get lost anyway. I've never had a problem with the New Posts button so am not sure what your problem is there Lorraine, and surely if there's a special swap going on, members would visit the section specially anyway.

Just to let you all know, I have had a very nice PM from Graham. He thinks it best things are left the way they are and for what its worth in hindsight I agree.
